Only costs associated with you (the student) and your academic program can be included in your cost of attendance. Your COA is originally set to a standard amount based on a number of factors (i.e., residency, program of study, housing plans, grade level). You can find ASU's
standard COA allowances online.
If you have additional costs, you may submit a
Student Budget Review to request consideration of those costs in your COA. Examples of additional costs include:
• child care
• change in housing plans since submitting the FAFSA
• flight instruction costs at the Polytechnic campus
• required books and supplies beyond the standard amount
• one time computer purchase up to $1,500
• one time direct cost of obtaining a first professional license or certificate
• thesis or dissertation expenses for graduate students
• medical or healthcare expenses paid out of pocket, not covered by insurance
It is important to understand that not all expenses can be included in a student's COA, per federal regulations. Examples of costs that cannot be included in your COA:
• credit card debt
• car loans or lease payments
• tithing expenses (i.e., religious donations)
• vacation, wedding or special occasion expenses
Please note: Increases to your COA do not guarantee an increase in aid. Budget reviews will not be processed until your financial aid file is complete and you have been offered aid.
