How do I use the Turnitin plagiarism checking tool in Canvas?

ASU uses a variety of academic integrity tools to protect the value and standards of its degrees and programs. For iCourses and oCourses, Honorlock is the principal online proctoring solution. For all other courses involving proctored tests, Respondus is available to prevent students from opening unauthorized applications during the assessment. Finally, Turnitin is available as a plagiarism checking tool for assignments.

Note: The only way that a student can submit a paper to Turnitin is via a Canvas Assignment on which the Turnitin plagiarism checking tool has been enabled by the instructor for academic integrity purposes. Instructors may also Quick Submit (i.e., Direct Submit) papers to Turnitin, but this functionality is not available to students at this time.

Submitting through an assignment

Turnitin uses the same Canvas upload process with which you're likely already familiar. If you haven't submitted through Canvas before, follow the steps below.
  1. Navigate to your course in ASU's Canvas LMS ( https://canvas.asu.edu or https://asu.instructure.com )
  2. From the Assignments tab, open your assignment.
  3. Use the Submit Assignment button to get started.

  4. Use the Choose file button to find the file you'd like to upload.

  5. If you haven't already, you may need to accept the Turnitin EULA and verify that your submission is your own work.
  6. When you're done, select the Submit assignment button to upload to Turnitin.

Note: A similarity report will generate for every file uploaded.

Accessing the Similarity Report

  1. From the side of any page within Canvas, select the Courses tab.
  2. Select the course in which your assignment is located.

If the course is not displayed in the My courses list, select All courses, and use the star icon to add the course as a favorite.  As a result, the course will appear in your Canvas Dashboard and Courses list.

  3. From the Course Navigation menu on the left, select Assignments.
  4. Select the relevant assignment.
  5. To the right-hand side of your assignment, click Submission details.
  6. To view your Similarity Report in Turnitin, select the similarity percentage (in the example, this is a red 100%).

Note: If you're having trouble opening Turnitin, check your pop-up blocker settings and create an exception.

File requirements for your submissions

  • Text, MS Word, MS PowerPoint
  • Postscript, PDF, RTF, HTML
  • WordPerfect and OpenOffice
