What Documentation Should I Submit If I Filed a Foreign Tax Return?

The necessary documentation needed to complete your financial aid file depends on the foreign country or U.S. territory in which the taxpayer is a citizen. Also, the foreign tax filer should attach an English translation of the document and provide the type of currency on the foreign tax return.

Residents of Puerto Rico
Please submit a signed Puerto Rican tax return (equivalent to the IRS 1040).

Residents of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau or the Federated States of Micronesia
Please submit copies of all wage and tax statements from each employer AND a signed and dated letter identifying all of the taxpayers income sources and amounts.  

Residents of American Samoa
Please submit an American Samoa tax transcript, which is free of charge from the American Samoa Tax Office.
 
Residents of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands or the U.S. Virgin Islands
Please submit a signed Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands or the U.S. Virgin Islands tax return (equivalent to the IRS 1040).
 
Residents of Other Foreign Nations Not Mentioned Above
Please submit a foreign tax transcript*. A tax transcript is document a foreign tax filer must request from their foreign taxing authority (i.e., Canada Revenue Agency, Servico de Administracion Tribtaria). It confirms the foreign income reported to the foreign taxing authority. 

*Per the U.S. Department of Education, only in situations where the foreign tax filer is unable to obtain a free copy of their foreign tax transcript from their foreign taxing authority, can they submit a signed copy of their foreign tax return (equivalent to the IRS 1040) along with proof that the foreign taxing authority charges a fee.
